Erik Ten Hag, manager of Manchester United, addressed the media following their 4-1 Europa League victory over Real Betis. The Dutch manager praised the team’s performance, praising midfielder Bruno Fernandes in particular, who played a larger role in the game.
“I think he was the best player on the pitch,” Ten Hag said of Fernandes. “He played a slightly deeper role tonight, which I thought he did brilliantly. He was the leader in establishing the game’s rhythm from the back in possession. I made a lot of good passes between the lines, and we created a lot of chances from there.”
Ten Hag also addressed the issue of complacency, admitting that errors were made during the game and that the team needed to reset and rebound. “We make mistakes and get hammered for it,” he admitted. “We didn’t set the standards, and if you say we were complacent, you can never do that in top football.”
The manager went on to emphasize the importance of the team continuing to perform at their peak and not letting their guard down. “Sometimes you just have to get the result, but I had such a bad result that everyone opened their eyes,” he explained. “However, you can’t ignore the previous 22 games in which this team performed admirably.”
Ten Hag also remarked on striker Wout Werghost’s passionate performance, recognizing both his strengths and the need to control his emotions. “He’s always a narrow margin,” the manager explained. “Sometimes he has to control it, bring it, that it is his strength, and not when it becomes your business.”
Ten Hag was pleased with the crowd’s reaction and the energy the team gave back during their performance. “There’s a great bond between the team and the fans, and we’re happy with it now,” he said.

The manager also discussed the preparation and training that goes into coaching players like Bruno and Antony. “You use both tools to coach the player,” he said, referring to the training grounds and watching the video.
Ten Hag’s post-match press conference was a mix of praise, caution, and recognition of the hard work that goes into maintaining top football performance. Manchester United will no doubt take the manager’s words to heart as they prepare for their next game, hoping to extend their winning streak.
